Another glorious trip to France
I have just returned from five days spent in the South of France at a domaine which can only be described as paradise! I went with two friends to stay at the home of an English friend who has been living there for the past five years. 'Marmiflet' is situated in the Aude region which is in the South. We flew from Southampton to Perpignan, which takes about 2 hours and were met at the Airport by our hostess and then driven to St. Gauderic where the house is situated. The nearest large town is Mirepoix a charming medieval town. The house sits in approximately 100 acres of woodland and meadow. It is a haven for wildlife lovers. The important thing about this property is the wild orchids which grow in abundance in the meadows and pathways - about 27 different species in total. The property is not overlooked and is very peaceful. It was the most wonderful place and I could have stayed there forever. The good news is that now that Caroline has finished renovating the house she is going to let it to lucky holidaymakers. There are five bedrooms which makes it ideal for family parties. There is also a swimming pool with a pool house complete with kitchen so there is no need to go in to the main house for for meals during the day. We went to Carcassonne one afternoon - this is within easy reach - about an hours drive. I have always wanted to see la Cite and I was not disappointed.
This is one of the types of wild orchids that are growing on the property. There are about 27 in total. These have all been logged by the authorities and the property has now been designated a Nature Reserve. The fascinating thing about this lovely place is that the mountains are visible from most vantage points around the house. There has not been much snow this year but a late fall last month has coated the peaks of some of the higher ones.
I cant wait to go back, but next time I shall drive my car. We had a quick look around for Depot Vente and Brocantes but always at the back of my mind was the knowledge that I had a weight restriction for my luggage. I did manage to buy a small amount of linen and a couple of old quilts. One of the reasons for my trip was to look for new sources of linen and textiles to replenish my stock for all the Fairs I shall be doing this year.
